Near Dark (1987)
Directed By: Kathryn Bigelow (Point Break,Strange Days)

The Prologue
I bet some folks out there aren’t aware of this little tale of Vampire love called Near Dark that came to us years ahead of the overly hyped Twilight. Sad fact was most folks didn’t even know about it when it first came out during the Vampire phase of the late 80’s when Vampire flicks became popular again. However opening up against The Lost Boys wasn’t a very good start for a film that had a very similar plot but with less of a publicity machine backing it.

First time director Kathryn Bigelow got her first shot at making a movie with this film and she also got a good chunk of the cast of Aliens to help with Bill Paxton (playing my favorite role of his), Lance Henriksen and Jenette Goldstein. Not to mention, she also got a warning that if in five days it appeared she didn’t know what she was doing she’d be replaced..She finished the film, and did a damn good job with it.

The Movie
The plot is as follows..A young man reluctantly joins a traveling “family” of evil vampires, when the girl he tried to seduce is part of that group. It’s kinda like Twilight in a way only it actually has a set of balls. Vampires here don’t sparkle in the sunlight folks, they burn the f’ up! Like they SHOULD! Also this family of Vampires aren’t as kind as the Cullens, they’d just assume kill you and get you out of the way, so you won’t be seeing any baseball games with them.

The leading lady here Mae (played by Jenny Wright, and oh yeah the girl is the vampire here) has more personality than Bella however I don’t see whats so special about her that Caleb goes through what he does to be with her..then again, given what takes place I suppose he doesn’t have much of a choice does he?

And I’m not trying to use this here as a way to take shots at Twilight it’s just this film actually follows the Vampire rules and actually comes across as more “realistic”..realist that is if Vampires and what not were real. It’s dark, it gets bloody, and we have a very cool scene that takes place inside a bar when the family decides they want to go out for a bit of fun..Using a George Straight song in a way I’m sure the country Legend never thought possible for his music.

Needless to say with the cast listed above you get very good acting in this film. You also get treated to Bill Paxon playing the role of Severen who is a very bad ass and cool Vampire, but he’s a Vampire in ever since of the word. If for nothing else check the movie out for him.

The Conclusion
If anyone out there is interested in seeing a good Vampire love story then go check this one out!. Released in an attempt I’m sure to cash in on the recent Vampire craze on DVD and Blu Ray again this past July (Even making the cover more Twilight like) you shouldn’t have much trouble tracking a copy down. However if Blu Ray isn’t a must for you then I’d recommend tracking down the Special Edition Anchor Bay put out a few years back, it’s the one I have and it’s great.

And about the new Twilight-Like cover…I mean really…what’s up with this new cover???
