Oh, H.G. Lewis! I think most of us have fond memories of this horror director and his classic such as The Wizard of Gore. Here we have three very early films that have been found, re-mastered, and placed on a Blu-ray/DVD combo pack. Now one thing we need to state upfront is the fact that these films are NOT horror films and one is even a porn movie! Yes, a porn movie, but we will have more on that in a moment. Still, it’s fun to see some of Lewis’ first films on Blu-ray. Now let us take a look at the films.

Ecstasies of Women (1969)

Ecstasies of Women turns out to be a torrid comedy/drama set in the swinging world of late 60s Los Angeles. One man and his friends are out the day before he is to get married sharing stories of women he had slept with. But as the night goes on he starts to be even friendlier with the women at the club they are at.

This comes across almost like a male Sex in the City show, only it happens in the 60s. This movie gives us a lot of talk, a lot of nudity, and it does a wash and repeat of those things for about 70 minutes. It isn’t horrible, but you keep waiting for something more to happen that just never does happen. So I guess the best part about it is seeing all these women of the 60’s letting it all hang out. The characters are bad, but the nudity is kind of cool. I do like the lead, Harry, who doesn’t waste his screen time and makes for a much better watch than this one would have probably been overall without him. I guess if you like train wrecks that are still entertaining, you can get a laugh out of some of the most awkward line delivery you’ll ever see on-screen with this one.

Linda and Abilene (1969)

This movie also from 1969 combines the savagery of a classic Hollywood western with sequences of intense eroticism. That means we may see someone riding a horse one moment and then riding something else in the very next moment. It still isn’t the raunchiest film in the set, but it is the longest.

While I wasn’t blown away by this erotic western, I will say that it is the best plot of the bunch. While most of these just depend on the sexual nature of things, we do have cowboys doing somewhat cowboy-ish things. Of course there is an erotic side to everything as well. So it isn’t a Django, but it still stay interesting enough to watch. Perhaps the movie feels a bit too uneven for its down good at times. You think things are heading one way and they may never make it to that point, leaving you with a film that doesn’t seem to know what it is perhaps. If you like movies that just feel sleazy, even if they may fall a bit short of the title, but still remain watchable, then you’ll be more than curious for this one. I think it is a lot of things, a whole mixed bag of them, but one think this one isn’t is dull and that goes a long way with me.

Black Love (1971)

Black Love exposes the lovemaking habits of the contemporary black couple through a series of amusing and creative vignettes. And this is also a full on porn film that shows everything you would see in a full on porn film. Only here we have a bit of a plot and we also have H.G. Lewis using a different name when he made this.

Well there isn’t a whole lot to say here. If you are just here for sex and seeing body parts in HD, then you finally have what you might be here for, but I wasn’t getting much out of this, because I’m not much on full on porn flick. That is really what this one feels like. We have a lot of black couples legit having sex on-screen while a narrator tries his best to make it sound like it’s more than what it really is, and God bless that narrator for that. That alone is somewhat funny, but let us calls a spade a spade here. This is a full-blown porn any way you slice it. Porn actually isn’t my thing (which I’ll say again for good measure), especially for review, but I will say it does pack some funny moments coming from the narrator.
